Miss Dimity's jam scones

Three cheers for the local library - Hip, hip, hooray. Hip, hip, hooray. Hip, hip, hoo-ray! Had I not been made redundant I would not have rediscovered the joys of local book lending and Melvil Dewey's Decimal Classification. I practically ran there yesterday when I realised that they had a copy of Jane Brocket's Cherry Cake and Ginger Beer just waiting to be checked out by yours truly.

As I flicked through the pages last night, I was taken on a delightful amble down memory lane. As a child, I devoured many of the books that Jane has included - Malory Towers made me yearn to go to boarding school, Moonface and Silky had a lot to answer for up in The Faraway Tree and I got lost for days on Kirrin Island in my Famous Five series.

So, I was eager to cook something from it today. Adamant that I would only make something using ingredients that were already in the flat, combined with the fact that the butter was still in the fridge, scones were the only answer. And how pleased I am that they were. Swift to make and bake, and even swifter to eat particularly with a good cup of tea. It's amazing to think that I haven't actually made these since my home economics class at school!
And as Miss Dimity knows - they are just swell with raspberry jam.

  1. How funny, but I actually looked at this in a book shop today. Not buying it, but it's only a matter of time.

I love the library too, my recipe collection has massively increased without us needing to move in order to make space for cookbooks.

Libraries rock my world! (as do scones, and these look delicious).

p.s. I hope you don't mind, I added you to my links. I love popping by here.

  2. Didn't you have any clotted cream in the fridge? Must have clotted cream with scones. Oh yes!

  3. What a find! Milly Molly Mandy's lid potatoes are a regular event in our house now thanks to the very same book. It's coming out in paperback in a few months I believe...

  4. Rebecca - What a coincidence! The library has become a necessity as there is a ban on books in the flat as our bookshelves are heaving. I'm slowly ploughing through the unread books...
Thanks for adding me to your links!

Mrs M - Alas, the cupboard was bare when it came to clotted cream. I did have one with ice cream which was delicious.

Ali - V exciting news about the paperback version. I loathe hardbacks, although the book did feel like an old famous five book with the thick cream pages. Will add the MMM's lid potatoes to the list - I have a feeling that I will be renewing the book when my 3 weeks are up...

  5. I just realised that we are reading that particular Enid Blyton adventure the moment.

I love Jane's book, we have great fun looking up recipes to accompany whatever it is we are reading at the time. The ginger beer is amazing.
