W is for...

Windfalls at Wisley.
All with wonderful names like Edith Hopwood, Worcester Pearmain and Beauty of Bedford.

There seems to have been a bumper crop this year. I keep spying them on my travels - in the hedgerow of a busy main road, quietly growing on the railway bank as the train trundles by, tucked into the corner of an allotment as vegetable beds are quietly tended to.

Mr and Mrs M Senior have a huge apple tree at the end of their garden which is straining under the weight of its bounty this year. We've been more than happy to take bags of them off their hands and our freezer is now happily stocked with apple puree.

How do you eat yours? I like to eat mine with vintage cheddar cheese. Or better still, in a warm crumble with lashings of custard and ice cream. Yum, yum.

  1. I have a freezer stashed with apple sauce, but the crumble sounds even tastier! G and I are doing a cider making course in October, so that might be a third option... K x

  2. They're really nice roasted in the oven with a pinch of cinnamon and some good vanilla icecream!

  3. Just made an apple crumble this weekend. I'm a freak and don't like custard though so I have to go with a wee pouring of double cream instead.

  4. I love apples with cheese and fruit cake, preferably if they follow crumpets and butter on a chilly autumn Sunday evening in front of the Antiques Roadshow and a costume drama - yum! x

  5. Hmmm....what a good idea - with cheese is always a very good idea. Not great for the waistline but heavenly all the same! xxx
