Trumpets

I've been a little quiet of late as this has been going on in the background again. I was in two minds as to whether I should mention it, but it does help explain why I've been a little rubbish of late. So I'm in the process of updating my CV, speaking to recruitment consultants and putting the world to rights. I'm taking things at a leisurely pace and working out which path I want to take. Lots of big questions need to be answered - location, commute, degrees of stress, job satisfaction and the like.

Blowing one's own trumpet can be rather tricksy, can't it? I don't know why. Society? Education? We had a fantastic work experience girl in the office last year - her confidence at the tender age of 16 was incredible. She didn't think twice about standing up in front of a group of people, two if not three times her age, and rattling off a presentation. Talking to her afterwards she explained that much of her school work takes the form of presentations and projects, and that certain classes are more like meetings than lessons. My immediate shudder at the thought of lots of mini-executives being churned out gave way to the far more positive view that this form of teaching instills a greater level of confidence in the pupil than the parrot-fashion education that I received.

Fortunately, parrot or no parrot, the job market looks more buoyant than this time last year. And in the spirit of social networking, if you know of someone who needs a Marketing Manager (advertising, DM etc) in the London/Surrey area - do let me know.

  1. Sometimes these things are cathartic and meant to be in order for us to change direction. Many years ago I worked in advertising in Soho - having twice been made redundant I now live on the Isle of Wight doing many and various jobs. I have time for friends, hobbies and gardening...I'm significantly poorer in pocket but richer in life. I wouldn't go back to commuting for all the tea in China!! Good luck with the job hunting!

  2. Oh no it seems to be going round at the moment, my sister-in-law has just has the same news and coincidentally does a similar job to you.

I know what you mean about trumpet blowing, I'm moving soon and need to start applying for new jobs but am dreading it because I suck at filling in application forms and saying "Oh yes I'm marvellous you should hire me immediately."

Good luck - I'll keep my ears open for jobs.

  3. Good luck with your search. I'm in a similar position, moving house and city and leaving my job behind as my husband has a new job. I keep telling myself that this is a wonderful opportunity and a great chance to work out what I want to do.

But I do feel that when I speak to consultants what I am really saying is like me like me like me!

I hope all goes well for you.

  4. Oh no! Sorry to hear you're going through the stress of all this again. We're "restructuring" and my post will go in a few months.

I do so admire your positive attitude, and will be taking your lead and thinking about the right path. Hopefully this time something a little less "admin monkey" and a little more jam-related!

Sending good job vibes your way...

  6. I'm no help to you unless you'd like to live in the American West, but I'm rooting for you just the same, and I'm sure that blowing your trumpet hard, if just for a little while, will separate you from the cacophony.

    Lots of luck!
