Magnifique Madeleines

I went to the new French bakery, The French Tarte, on Saturday with the WI girls and it was all very jolly, if not a little hectic. I had a very nice Chausson aux Pommes but the one thing that I really wanted was a Madeleine.

Lucky I got a Madeleine pan for Christmas then!
They turned out far better than I was expecting and even got the boat bump. Instead of lemon zest, I used almond extract. You can find the recipe here - it's also in his marvellous book, Home Bake. He also suggests trying it with crushed pistachios. Well, if you insist...

Anyhoo, very nice with a coffee and a good book - currently An Equal Music by Vikram Seth. Probably best eaten within a day of cooking.

Talking of baking - did any of you see Lorraine Pascale's new show on BBC 2? What a breath of fresh air! Thought the 'I can't believe you made that' cake looked fab and I'm definitely trying the parmesan and poppy seed lollipops.

New year. New things. Happy days.

  1. Hello! I saw this on my blog updates and had to comment! They look very tasty - I've never made them (although probably should have done by now!) so thanks for the link to the recipe! Madeleine x

  2. They look perfect! You've inspired me to try my madeleine pan. I'm embarrassed to admit how long it's been sitting in the cupboard unused!

And I'll be sure to look up the new show when I get back to London.

You couldn't push that plate in this direction could you?

  4. I don't know if you've ever done anything as trashy as watching the Transporter films, but there is a scene in there where the kidnapped woman finds Madeleine tins in the house of the shady, muscle-bound 'chauffeur' and makes them for him before he gets up from a recipe he just has hanging around.

    Bonkers.

  6. I love Madeleines, they're surprisingly easy to make aren't they? Even easier to eat though. Lovely blog, I've just successfully avoided twenty minutes or so of revision whilst nosing around -thank you!

  7. They look yummy. I have fond memories of madeleines my grandma made which she covered in strawberry jam and dipped in dessicated coconut. x
