Flapjack fiasco

I haven't made flapjacks for years. I'd forgotten how wonderful the smell of melted butter and golden syrup is. I'd also forgotten Mum's recipe.

No problem - Nigella to the rescue. Sort of.

Recipe followed and mixture pressed firmly into the baking tray, the flapjacks went into the oven. They were taken out with get aplomb and left to cool.

When it came to the cutting, disaster - my 'pressing firmly' hadn't been firm enough. I'd ended up with crumble topping.

The conclusion was to 'press' some more - so down came two heavy books from the shelf and we waited for a couple more hours before trying to cut them again.
Alas - whilst golden and lovely, not even Peter Ackroyd's London: The Biography could squeeze those darn giant rolled oats together.

We have taken to eating the little sugary piles with a spoon whilst sipping tea. All very ridiculous and not 'lunch box' friendly in the slightest. The first Domestic Goddess recipe that didn't quite go to plan.

I'm going to try Mum's recipe next time. What's your fail-safe flapjack recipe?

  2. I love Nigella, but sometimes her baking results are a little random.

  3. I also find Nigella not to be exactly fail-safe. I have a recipe which I will post in the near future which is really nice and I don't even like flapjacks.

  5. I love this recipe: it always works for me,Traditional Flapjack Recipe, britishfood.about.com/od/eorecipes/r/flapjack.htm. Sometimes I spread melted chocolate on top just to make them utterly delicious:)

  6. I wish I had a fail safe recipe, mine always crumble despite tasting fab! Still all gets eaten though but not great for taking to school in packed lunches!
